Winnipeg Casino Workers Avert Strike With Acceptance of New Contract Offer
In a turn of events that alleviates potential disruptions, the union representing over 750 employees across three prominent Winnipeg casinos has confirmed the acceptance of a new collective agreement proposed by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries.
The deal comes as a welcomed resolution, effectively avoiding an imminent strike that had loomed for December 23.
Unifor, the union overseeing the interests of cashiers, dealers, slot attendants, and security personnel at Club Regent Casino, McPhillips Station Casino, and the Shark Club Casino, announced the acceptance of the four-year contract in a news release.
Among the key highlights of the newly agreed terms are substantial wage increases exceeding 11%, applied retroactively from June 2022.
Additionally, the agreement incorporates provisions for shift premiums, providing further financial incentives for workers, along with signing bonuses ranging from $600 to $1,800, contingent upon the hours worked by individual employees, as detailed by Unifor.
Moreover, dealer premiums are slated to experience a boost, with increments varying between 20 to 70 cents per hour as outlined in the terms of the agreement.
Earlier this month, the union had conveyed the overwhelming support received from the vast majority of its unionized members, who voted affirmatively for a strike mandate, empowering the scene of Canadian gambling on the rise.
The looming threat of a strike loomed large if a satisfactory collective agreement wasn't reached by December 23. Notably, these workers had been navigating their professional roles without a formal collective agreement since June 2022.
The successful negotiation and acceptance of this new contract represent a significant step towards ensuring the welfare and fair compensation of the dedicated workforce employed within the casino establishments.
The agreement not only secures better remuneration but also establishes a framework for improved working conditions, reflecting a collaborative effort between the union and the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries.
This development brings relief to the employees and patrons alike, fostering an atmosphere of stability within the Winnipeg casino community. With the specter of a strike lifted, both parties can now look forward to a renewed period of cooperation and productivity within these entertainment venues.
